My Ideal Stomp Box

I’ve been playing a bass drum and hi hat combination with my heels for the last few years and get great results in keeping our band (duet/t@b) tight. These instruments take a lot of space in our small car and are a bit to loud for an acoustic (house concert) setting. So I’ve been tossing this adaptation of a box drum around in my head for a while. It’s for standing on top of and using heels to knock on the top panel for sound generation…

  • The box will be 2×2 feet big and about 2 or 3 inches high (outside dimensions). This will fit nicely into the trunk of a small car…
  • A sound hole will be facing the audience. Toes of the right foot will rest over the sound hole. Left foot toes rest on a front corner. Sounds are achieved by stomping the right heel onto the center of the top board (low note) and the left heel close the the side edge (high note)
  • Obviously, the top of the box acts like a membrane or skin and must carry a 300 pound gorilla while dancing.
  • The box will rest on a set of rubber or felt coins, to make the resulting sound independent of underlying stage material (concrete/parquet etc…)
  • The bottom of the box may very well be a lid, to access (or install) pickup electronics) and potentially stash extra junk inside the box while traveling.
