From the Same Cup

(Rhyme inspired by stories from Pictou county)

Shore was discovered
Blood was mixed up
We started off drinking
From the same cup.

Think of the seadog
Spinning the yarn
Family’s heirloom.
Rust in the barn.

Was not the land.
Was not our drive.
Was the first people
Who kept us alive.

Shore was discovered
Blood was mixed up
We started off drinking
From the same cup.

Never was freedom
In who you may wed.
People be punished
For what’s in their bed.

Great many stories
Painted in white
Of what did happen
During the night.

Shore was discovered
Blood was mixed up
We started off drinking
From the same cup.

Tales of the ocean.
Of buying the farm.
Of kicking the bucket.
Of giving a darn.

Always the struggle.
To live by the bay.
She give and she take.
Your loved ones away.

Shore was discovered
Blood was mixed up
We started off drinking
From the same cup.
